George Washington directed the establishment of an arsenal at Augusta in 1793. The Arsenal was initially built near the river but after the 1819 yellow fever epidemic wiped out the garrison it was moved to its present, more healthful location on the Hill in 1827. The Arsenal was surrendered to Georgia troops in 1861. A variety of munitions and arms were manufactured here during the war.
